US House passes troop-surge funding bill

The US House has sent on to the president a bill to fund the troop surge in Afghanistan.
The US House has sent on to the president a bill to fund the troop surge in Afghanistan.

House Democrats reluctantly voted for the $59 billion measure to pay for President Obama's 30,000-troop surge.

But domestic programs also detailed in the bill have been severely stripped of funds.

The replenishment of disaster funds and money to keep teachers on the job or boost student aid have been mostly knocked back.

Last week the Senate rejected the bill which
releases $33 billion to pay for the new troops in Afghanistan and other Pentagon programs.

Mr. Obama's own party was split down the middle on the crucial war funding vote, which was almost brought undone by recently leaked documents on the Afghanistan war.

While half the Democrats in the House were loathe to recommend the bill, Republicans stepped in to help pass it.

The war funding bill, which only funds the war for a few months, now goes to Mr Obama for his signature.
